THE CITY OF SEVEN WONDERS

Located near the edge of the Colorado Plateau and south of the San Francisco Peaks is the city of Flagstaff, Arizona. It’s the largest city in Northern Arizona with a population of over 75,000 and a combined metropolitan population of over 145,000. Due to its location near the Grand Canyon, the Arizona Snowbowl, Meteor Crater, Oak Creek Canyon, and historic Route 66, Flagstaff benefits a robust tourism industry. Flagstaff is also known for being home to Lowell Observatory, The U.S. Naval Observatory and the United States Geological Survey Flagstaff Station.


Flagstaff’s origins date back to 1855, when Navy Lieutenant Beale passed over the location that became Flagstaff while surveying a road. Later in 1876, settlers from Boston moved to the area.


They raised a flag on a stripped pine tree, a “flag staff”, to celebrate the centennial of the US and thus giving the city its name.


The Lowell Observatory gained fame as having discovered Pluto in 1930, then its satellite Charon in 1978. The Clark Telescope was also used to map the moon during the


Apollo program in the 1960s, which allowed them to choose a safe landing site for the lunar landers.


Today, Flagstaff is home to one of Arizona’s 3 University’s, Northern Arizona University, home of the Lumberjacks. Flagstaff is the seat of Coconino County and is also


located in the middle of the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the world. Flagstaff is surrounded by miles and miles of forest providing unlimited outdoor activities including skiing,


mountain biking, hiking, boating, horseback riding and much, much more.
